Worship
If you would like to try your hand at reading, leading prayers and/or preparing our worship please contact Georgie gmheskins@gmail.com. The rotas are usually planned for three months at a time, so you can offer to do it once and see how it feels – or share with someone else. You can always decide to take a break or choose a particular, convenient date. At present the guidelines look like this:
1. Please prepare sheet and email to gileswgoddard@gmail.com, for copying, by the Monday evening before – or photocopy x30
and leave in St Johns by 5.45 on Tuesday. If you haven’t any time to prepare, ask someone else or adapt an existing template.
(NEW REQUEST: Please save your sheet on your PC/laptop – and we will, one day, put together a ‘resource book’). Giles also
oversees invitations to speakers.
2. Readings: Gospel text is set (that of the previous Sunday); Prophetic text may well be set (by the speaker); if not, choose one
yourself
3. Music: Andy chooses music in advance, usually a Taize chant and a second song for the end. You or he may also want to choose a
sung response to the intercessions (such as ‘through our lives and by our prayers….’)
4. Intercessions: feel free to write your own, or not. You may want to incorporate something relevant to the talk or particular theme
(criminal justice, Zimbabwe e.g.)
5. Silence: an extended period of silence follows the intercessions. This is about 8 minutes at present – and can sometimes be
extended to 10. (Please don’t reduce it to less than 5 minutes – even if the speaker has over-run!)
6. Final prayer: we tend to use the same one; but feel free to change to another if you like
7. Arrive, if you can, in good time – so as to find readers for the two scripture passages.
8. You may also want to invite someone to lead the intercessions
9. If you arrange a swap – or there are any problems, please contact Georgie gmheskins@gmail.com or Steve steveagayle@yahoo.com
